REMOTE CONTROL - DESKTOP ASSISTANCE One of the developments in assisting computer users is the ability to view their desktop or screen and see exactly what they are seeing. This eliminates the frustration and confusion that existed, including the never ending series of questions like "What do you see in the upper right hand corner of the screen?" There are 2 primary ways of achieving this ability to see the end user's screen. We can install a program that makes the screen visible to us whenever we need it. This is particularly helpful when there is the need to work on the computer for the client whether they are there or not. The alternative is to make available a small program the client must initiate, thereby giving us this remote control capability. The second option is best when the need to see the desktop is infrequent. By prior arrangement, the client downloads and runs a program that automatically connects their computer screen to our technician. When the session is over, the program removes itself and the computer is once again secure and unavailable to the outside world. Each of the files on the download screen will connect the client to a different technician, therefore, arrangements have to be made before using to assure the technician is available. In addition to being able to see your screen, we can also control much of what your computer does while we are connected, e.g. start the Internet Explorer, configure the machine to view images, etc. A small icon is put in the system tray (along with the clock and other icons at the bottom right of your screen). Right click the VNC icon and then selecting Close ends the session and automatically removes all the software. At no time are changes made to your computer's registry. |
